GENEVA, N.Y. - A 17-2 run early in the second half turned a one-point deficit into a 16-point deficit, and the Bard College men's basketball team lost to Hobart College, 67-58, in a Liberty League game on Friday night.
Bard (5-13, 0-9 Liberty League) hung tough with the first-place Statesmen in the first half, trailing by just three at halftime, 29-26. In the first minute of the second half, a layup by
Lamar Powell cut the lead to one.
But Hobart (16-5, 10-2 Liberty League) scored 17 of the next 19 points over a seven-minute span, and the game was over. The lead ballooned to 20 twice in the second half, the last time with three minutes left. Bard's reserves closed the game on a 12-1 run to account for the deceiving final score.
The Statesmen outrebounded the Raptors 23-13 in the second half, after the visitors had kept it close (13-15) in the first half. Hobart just wore Bard down.
The winners were led by Richie Bonney (Norwich, NY), who had 17 points and 11 rebounds. Joe Gibbons (Lindenhurst, NY) added 15 points, and Connor Rehbaum (Cheektowaga, NY) added 10.
Powell led Bard with 21 points, while
Ben Kane and
Alex Fabean-Scotch added nine points apiece. For the second straight game,
Pat Lichtenstein led the Raptors in rebounds with eight.
