Box Score
CANTON, N.Y. - If you're going to try to score 1,000 points in your NCAA Div. III basketball career, you could do it the "easy" way, or you could do it the "hard" way.

The easy way? Average 10 points a game for 25 games per season, for four seasons. Easy - 1,000 points.

The hard way? Score 484 points in your first three seasons combined, score 517 in your senior year, and score the 1,000th point in the final minute of your final game. On your birthday.

Bard's Lamar Powell did it the hard way, but he did it, and he is the eighth player in the history of Bard men's basketball to score 1,000 points in his career - he has 1,001.

The Raptors didn't win the game, losing to St. Lawrence University, 89-65, but they did work hard down the stretch to get Powell to the milestone. Surely he would have preferred to be making big shots down the stretch in a close game, but that's not the way it went down on Saturday.

It was a 15-0 run during a six-plus minute scoreless stretch that turned a 44-42 deficit into a 59-42 deficit for Bard with 11:39 left in the game. The Raptors didn't challenge after that point and instead turned to honoring Powell and fellow senior Ben Kane as their careers wound down.

St. Lawrence's season ends at 10-15 overall, 6-10 in the Liberty League. Bard is 5-20, and 0-16 in the Liberty League. The winners had five players score in double figures, led by freshman Kyle Kobis (Elma, NY), who had 18.

Powell scored 20, making a pair of free throws with 35 seconds left to score his 1,000th and 1,001st career points. He and Kane subbed out of the game at that point and were greeted by their thankful teammates and coaches.

Freshman Alex Fabean-Scotch hit four three-pointers and finished with 14 points. Junior Siondueh Burnette added 12 points and seven rebounds.

Oh, and about Burnette ... he has averaged a little over 10 points per game for the last three seasons, and will enter his senior year needing 234 points in 25 games to get to 1,000.

Guess he's doing it the "easy" way.
