Bard splits on first day of Raptors Invitational

Bard beat Sarah Lawrence and lost to Wells on Friday night.

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - The Bard College men's volleyball team split a pair of matches on the first day of the Bard Raptors Invitational on Friday.

Bard swept Sarah Lawrence, 3-0, and was swept by Wells College, 3-0.

Wells and City College of New York, who each went 2-0 on Friday, will play for the tournament championship on Saturday afternoon at 1:30.

Bard will play Keuka College in the third place match, and Sarah Lawrence will play SUNYIT in the fifth place match, both at 11 a.m.

The Raptors opened play with a 25-8, 25-10, 25-8 sweep of Sarah Lawrence (0-11). Bard hit .438 with 25 aces. Jesse Small had seven kills (.778), Billy Williams had five, while Daniel Gagne, Alex Adams and Shane McDonald had four kills each. Henry Kasiske had 18 assists.

Wells, which defeated Bard 3-2 at the SUNYIT Tournament to open the season, swept the Raptors on Friday 26-24, 25-13 and 25-21. The Express outhit Bard (.272 to .196) and had 12 total blocks to Bard's six. The winners got 10 kills from John Farruggia (Leonardsville, NY) and nine kills and 13 digs from Liam Kaylor (Falls Church, VA). Derek Nipps (Turnersville, NY) had 29 assists.

For Bard, Small had 11 kills and Williams had 10; Kasiske had 29 assists and 14 digs, Gagne added 10 digs.
