Bard falls to #1 Rivier; takes a set from #3 New Paltz

Bard took a set from third-ranked New Paltz on Saturday at the Springfield Invitational.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The Bard College men's volleyball team lost to top-ranked Rivier University, 3-0, and to third-ranked New Paltz, 3-1, at the Springfield Invitational on Saturday.

The Raptors were the only team to take a set from New Paltz in the tournament. The Hawks swept #1 Rivier and #2 Springfield at the tournament on Friday night, then did the same to Johnson & Wales on Saturday morning.

Rivier defeated Bard 25-20, 25-20 and 25-19. Freshman Ian Wolski (Westfield, MA) led the way with 12 kills (.333) and 6-foot-8 junior Brendan Tutino (Manorville, NY) added 11 kills and hit .526. The Raiders hit .349. Freshmen Matt LaSance and Matt Ortiz had 18 assists apiece, and sophomore Mike Hovnanian had 14 digs. Rivier is 7-1.

For Bard, Billy Williams had 10 kills (.250), Alex Adams had six kills and nine digs, and Henry Kasiske had 25 assists.

Later in the day, Bard played third-ranked New Paltz for the second time this week. The Raptors hit .320 in the first set and won it, 25-21. New Paltz found its footing from there, winning the final three sets 25-20, 25-20 and 25-18. The Hawks are 15-1.

The winners got 15 kills from freshman C.J. Borfitz (Inwood, NY) and 12 from freshman Jake Roessler (Massapequa, NY). Sophomore Kevin Nardone (Port Washington, NY) had 50 assists.

For Bard, Williams had nine kills and Kasiske had 24 assists. They both had seven digs, and Adams had four total blocks.
