ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - The Bard College men's basketball team played Union College on Wednesday night, and again on Friday night.
On Wednesday night, Union jumped out early, had a six-point lead at half, and never let Bard see the lead in the second half, winning by 11.
On Friday night, Bard jumped out early, Union was up by seven at half, and never let Bard see the lead in the second half, winning by 11. Wednesday night was 84-73; Friday night was 74-63.
The only difference between the games was the first few minutes of Friday's game, when Bard ran out to a 9-0 lead. A few minutes later, Union put together a 9-0 run of it's own, and with a 10-2 burst over the last 4:19 of the half, had a 36-29 lead at the break. In the first 20 minutes, the teams each shot 46 percent from the field, but the Dutchmen had a 22-10 rebounding edge, and that was the difference.
Bard trimmed the deficit to five in the first 90 seconds of the second half, and Union pushed it back to nine. The Raptors cut it to five again with 16:16 to go; Union pushed it back to nine less than a minute later.
The bulge got as big as 16 with 8:38 to go, and although Bard trimmed that lead back to eight with 2:58 left, Union was never challenged and won going away.
Sophomore Laurent Firlotte (Stratford, CT) scored 10 of his 15 points in the second half for Union; Ray Bethel (Queensbury, NY) added 15 points, William Hython (Syracuse, NY) had a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds, and Kevin Weckworth (Randleman, NC) chipped in with 11 points.
Union is 8-12 overall, 5-7 in the Liberty League.
Bard (5-17, 0-13 Liberty League) got 19 points from
Lamar Powell, 18 from freshman
Alex Fabean-Scotch, and 15 from junior
Siondueh Burnette.
