Box Score
TROY, N.Y. - Bard College senior
Lamar Powell scored a career-high 40 points, but the Raptors lost to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, 103-84, in a Liberty League game on Tuesday night.
This one was over early. RPI (8-14, 6-7 Liberty League) jumped out to a 10-0 lead and never looked back. It went from 10-0, to 15-3, to 30-10, to 44-15 ... and it was 50-26 at halftime. The Engineers shot 51 percent from the floor in the first half, and that bulge turned the second half into a track meet.
Powell scored 23 of his 40 in the second half as the teams ran back and forth and traded baskets. The Raptors (5-15, 0-11 Liberty League) did cut the deficit to 77-60 with 8:40 left in the game, but the result was never in doubt, and Bard has lost 11 straight.
Powell's previous career high - 29 points twice this season - was eclipsed when he hit the 30-point mark with eight minutes left in the game. He buried a three-pointer at the buzzer to get to 40, the most points scored in a game for Bard since Justin White scored 46 in an 83-66 loss to Rivier College on Feb. 19, 2009.
With five games left in his career, Powell needs 17.6 points per game to become just the eighth player in program history to score 1,000 points.
RPI got 13 points from sophomore Jesus Cardenas (Phoenix, AZ). The Engineers got points from 14 different players.
Siondueh Burnette added 11 points and two blocks for Bard.
Jeffrey Jordan and
Harry Johnson added nine points apiece. Jordan and
Garrett Clifton led Bard with six rebounds apiece.
The Raptors get right back on the court Wednesday night in a rescheduled game at Union College. Tip is at 8. Union will be at Bard on Friday, and Skidmore will visit on Saturday - Senior Day - in the last home game of the season.
