SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Bard College men's basketball team rallied from a 13-point deficit early in the second half to eventually take the lead, but the Raptors were outscored 13-2 over the final 3:58 in a season-opening 71-63 loss to Haverford College in the 23rd annual Equinox Classic on Saturday night.
The game was played at Swarthmore College.
The Fords (1-0) held a lead throughout the first half that got as big as 10, but was 34-28 at the half. Haverford expanded the lead to 43-30 with 16:27 left in the game.
Bard (0-1) responded with a 10-2 run, and it was 45-40 with plenty of time left (14:22). Slowly the Raptors kept closing the gap, and when
Alex Fabean-Scotch hit a three-pointer with 6:10 left, Bard had it's first lead at 56-55. Another bomb from Fabean-Scotch with 3:58 broke a tie and gave Bard a 61-58 lead.
Over those last four minutes, though, Bard went 0-for-3 from the floor with four turnovers and seven fouls. Haverford went 8-for-12 from the foul line during that stretch to pull out the victory.
The Fords got a big performance from sophomore guard Matt Sherman (Narbarth, PA), who had 27 points, including 17 in the first half. Gibby Graves (Chappaqua, NY) added 16 points.
The loss overshadowed the college debut of Bard freshman
DeVahnte Mosley, who had 21 points, eight rebounds and two assists. Senior
Siondueh Burnette added 16 points and five rebounds in 24 minutes. Fabean-Scotch finished with 12 points, and
Pat Lichtenstein chipped in with eight points and a team-high nine rebounds.
Bard travels across town on Sunday to play Swarthmore at Haverford College at 1 p.m. Live Stats and Live Video are available for that contest.
