HAVERFORD, Pa. - Something had to change in the second half if the Bard College men's basketball team was going to beat Swarthmore on Sunday afternoon.
The Raptors were down 39-36 and the Garnet had done a lot of the damage at the foul line, making 17-of-20. Aside from the obvious concern about players fouling out, it was making it close to impossible for Bard to put together any kind of offensive run to take the lead.
Bard turned the tide with a 13-1 run over the first nine minutes of the second half en route to a 71-62 victory on the final day of the 23rd annual Equinox Classic.
The Raptors turned it up defensively during that stretch and through the second half, holding Swarthmore (0-2) to 26 percent from the field in the final 20 minutes to pick up their first win of the new season. Five different Bard players scored during the 13-1 stretch, with back-to-back three-pointers by
Zach Goodman and
DeVahnte Mosley pushing a 44-40 lead to 50-40 with 11:50 to go in the game.
Swarthmore didn't get closer than seven the rest of the way. Freshman Matt Brennan (Ridgefield, CT) led the Garnet with 16 points, while sophomore Chris Bourne (Monmouth Junction, NJ) added 14 points and 11 rebounds.
Mosley, the Bard freshman, had another impressive game, producing 23 points and four rebounds. Through two games, he's averaging 22 points per game and is shooting 70 percent from the field. The only Bard player shooting the ball better is senior
Siondueh Burnette (72%), who had 15 points and eight rebounds before fouling out with 2:27 left. Burnette was named to the All-Tournament team. In all, nine players scored for the Raptors, who needed that kind of gritty team effort to get a win on Sunday.
The Raptors' home opener is next. Bard will host Sarah Lawrence College on Wednesday night at 8. You can follow that game via Live Stats or Live Video right here.
