Huggins' goal, defense carries Bard past New Paltz

Bard senior Maddy Huggins scored the game-winner in the victory over New Paltz on Friday night.
Box Score ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - In the third minute of Friday night's non-league game against New Paltz, Bard senior Maddy Huggins collected a pass on the right side of the penalty area, took a moment to settle it and get it to her right foot, then ripped a blast from 15 yards that clearly had the keeper beat.

Clang!

It hit the crossbar.

About three minutes later, this time from about 22 yards straight on just outside the box, she had the same opportunity. She took a short pass from Sylvia Kool, settled it, turned ... and booted a change up.

She took a little off this one. More like a finesse shot, it floated gently into the upper right corner of the goal, tucking just beneath the crossbar this time.

It turned out to be all Bard would need, as the Raptors beat New Paltz for the first time in school history. The historic 1-0 decision ended the Hawks' 14-game domination of the series.

The rest of the first half was played evenly, but defense was the story of the contest. Huggins' goal turned out to be Bard's only shot on goal of the game. New Paltz (1-3-2) managed four shots on goal, three coming in desperation in the second half, and none that could be described as quality opportunities.

In the 90th minute, as the clock wound under 10 seconds, a desperation long ball was sent deep into Bard's box by a New Paltz defender. New Paltz junior Sarah Painter (Blue Point, NY) found herself alone just a few yards from the goal line, but she fanned on her attempted volley, and the horn sounded. It was the Hawks' best chance to score all night.

Bard's stellar defensive effort was anchored by Isabel Keddy-Hector and Abbey Labrecque; the Raptors also got quality play from Joanna Regan, Hallie Nolan, Gina Lewis and Victoria Castiglione.

Kelsey O'Brien played the first half between the pipes, making one save and earning her first collegiate victory. Lily Harris made three saves in the second half.

One other note: Bard senior captain Brianna Bean and sophomore all-leaguer Margot Kalach Hanono did not play due to injuries.

Bard (2-2-1) next plays at Hartwick on Wednesday night at 7. You can follow that game via Live Stats right here.
