Bard battles, falls to SUNYIT, 6-5

Bard senior Adam Flowers struck out seven over eight innings and went 2-for-4 at the plate on Tuesday.

UTICA, N.Y. - After seeing two leads slip away, then tying the game late, the Bard College baseball team lost a heartbreaker on Tuesday when SUNYIT freshman Connor Passalacqua (Whitestown, NY) hit a one-out, pinch-hit, walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth to give the Wildcats a 6-5 victory.

Down 2-0 after an inning, Bard took the lead with three runs in the top of the third. Leo Stevens-Lubin led off with an infield single, and Tom Danz tripled then scored on a throwing error, tying the game at 2. Ryan Conklin doubled and stole third, the Tyler Emel plated him with a sacrifice fly.

SUNYIT (8-10) went up 4-3 in the fourth, but Bard (3-11) tied it again in the fifth when Conklin reached on an error and eventually came around to score on a single by Adam Flowers.

The Wildcats got two in the bottom of the fifth to go up 5-4, but the Raptors fought back and tied it in the top of the seventh. Danz doubled and moved to third on errant pickoff attempt, and Conklin drove him in with an infield single.

It stayed 5-5 until Passalacqua hit the game-winner to score pinch-runner Jhomel Solano (Bronx, NY) in the bottom of the ninth.

"The guys played a solid game today," Bard assistant coach Andy Salvatore said, "and we feel good about it."

Danz went 2-for-5 with a double, triple, one RBI and two runs scored; Conklin also went 2-for-5 with a double, one RBI and two runs scored.

Flowers gave up just three earned runs over eight innings, striking out seven, and went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
