ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - The steps to respectability aren't spelled out in a book, or listed on a motivational poster somewhere.

Respect is gained gradually in most cases, and although the Bard College women's lacrosse team was defeated by Union College, 14-4, in a Liberty League game on Friday afternoon, it appears that they've taken a step.

They're annoying.

It's meant in the most positive way you can imagine. Union scored five goals over the span of 3:14 early in the first half and the game appeared over. But Bard scored the next two goals to make it 5-2 with 15:30 left in the first half.

That prompted Union head coach Abigail Jackson to call a time out. The team huddled on the field and Jackson stayed on the sideline, letting the numbers on the scoreboard sink in.

See? Annoying.

The Dutchwomen responded with five goals before halftime and took a 10-2 lead into the break. Clearly Jackson had made her point. Bard was outscored 4-2 in the second half mostly by Union's reserves, but as been the pattern this season anyway, Bard is coming away from these Liberty League games with a little something to be proud of.

It's a step.

Ten different players scored for Union, which is right in the thick of the Liberty League playoff hunt at 4-2 (6-5 overall). Freshman Jessica Farland (Fiskdale, MA) led the way with four goals.

Bard got single goals from Brianna Bean, Joanna Regan, Stephanie LaMont and Shana Joseph. The Raptors struggled against Union in draw controls (6-13) and shots (6-22), but they had their moments against a probable playoff team.

They'll get an up-close look at another one on Saturday, because William Smith is coming to Annandale. The Herons are tied with Union at 4-2 in the league after Friday's 10-9 loss at Vassar.
