Bard wins first UVC match of season in last UVC match of season

Senior Jose Mendez had seven digs in Bard's 3-1 victory over SUNYIT on Wednesday night.
Box Score ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - The Bard College men's volleyball team picked up its first United Volleyball Conference victory of the season on Wednesday night, topping SUNY Institute of Technology, 3-1, in the final UVC match of the season for both teams.

Set scores for Bard were 25-22, 28-30, 25-18 and 25-20.

The Raptors (8-16 overall, 1-10 UVC) got up 5-1 in the first set and never trailed, although SUNYIT (8-16, 0-11 UVC) tied it at 21-21. Kills by Kai Bernier-Chen and Zack Nussdorf, and aces from Jesse Small and Henry Kasiske put that set away, 25-22.

It was SUNYIT which led throughout most of the second set, but Bard rallied, tied it at 21-21, fought off three set points, and eventually fell, 30-28.

Bard's best-hitting set was the third set (.290), and the Raptors led from start to finish, winning it 25-18.

The fourth set was tied four times early, but it turned when Bard went on a 6-1 run with a 13-12 lead. The Wildcats tried to close the gap, but Bard took the set, 25-20, and the match.

Billy Williams led Bard with 16 kills and eight digs; Zack Nussdorf added 10 kills and four digs; Henry Kasiske had 39 assists, five aces and three digs; Kai Bernier-Chen and Troy Robertson added seven kills apiece, and Daniel Gagne had eight digs.

Although it wasn't Bard's last home contest, senior Jose Mendez and graduate student Damianos Lazaridis Giannopoulos were honored before the game. Bard's last home matches will be on Saturday, when CCNY and Purchase visit for a tri-match.
