Baseball team drops doubleheader to Houghton

Freshman Tyler Emel had two hits including an RBI triple in Game 2 on Sunday.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SECAUCUS, N.J. - The euphoria of winning the first two varsity baseball games for Bard College since 1937 quickly wore off on Sunday afternoon.

Bard lost both ends of a doubleheader with Houghton College, 18-0 and 4-3. The Raptors are 2-2.

In the first game, hard-throwing Houghton sophomore Seth Cornell no-hit Bard, striking out 12 and walking just three in seven innings of work.

"He had an overpowering fastball," said Bard assistant coach Andy Salvatore.

Bard freshman Ryan Conklin pitched the second game, striking out five in seven innings. He had the lead, 3-2, in the bottom of the sixth, but Houghton scored twice, helped by an error and a catcher's interference call.

Bard was down 2-0 in the top of the fourth when Conklin walked and scored on a triple by Tyler Emel. Alec Montecalvo then tied the game with an RBI groundout.

In the top of the fifth, Bard took the lead. Cooper Roberts singled and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Steve Kovalcik. Elliot Garcia pinch-ran for Roberts and scored on a double by Andres Medina, giving the Raptors a 3-2 advantage.

Houghton scored twice in the sixth, and Bard went down 1-2-3 in the seventh. Houghton is 3-3.

Emel finished with two hits for Bard in the second game.

"When you get beat like we did in the first game, you kind of have to forget about it and it's not easy," Salvatore said. "But we played tough in the second game. Couple of bounces here and there and we win that one."

Up next for Bard is a spring trip to the Central Florida Invitational. The Raptors will first play Massachusetts Institute of Technology on Sunday at 3 p.m. Bard will spend the week down there, playing six games.
