Raptors finish Liberty League season with loss to RPI

Lamar Powell scored 13 points in Bard's loss to RPI on Tuesday night.
Box Score ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - The Bard College men's basketball team has proven this season that it can sometimes compete with some of the top teams in the conference.

RPI, however, isn't one of them.

Playing against the worst defensive team in the league, Bard was held to 17 first-half points en route to a 77-51 loss. The Raptors finish the Liberty League season at 1-15; they are 4-20 overall with one non-league game left on Friday night.

Box score

RPI (14-9 overall and 9-5 in the Liberty League) jumped on Bard early with full-court pressure and amazing three-point shooting. The Engineers hit 4-of-5 three-pointers to take a 12-2 lead after four minutes, and with 9:19 left in the first half, it was 24-5. The Raptors couldn't break the press, and when they did, they didn't hit their shots, making just 5-of-27 field goals in the first half (18%).

RPI made 7-of-12 three-pointers in the first half and led, 36-17, at the break.

Bard shot the ball better in the second half (43%) but by then, it was too late. The Raptors trimmed the deficit to 16 points a couple of times in the second half, but in the end, it was a 26-point loss, similar to the 24-point loss suffered at RPI back on Jan. 22.

RPI used 17 players, none getting more than 21 minutes, and forced 19 Bard turnovers. Senior Brendan Farley (Burlington, MA) led the winners with 13 points, and senior Daniel Martin (Cohasset, NY) added 10 points and four blocked shots.

Junior Lamar Powell led Bard with 13 points; senior Jeremy Arnstein hit four three-pointers in the second half to finish with 12 points; and sophomore Chris McNaughton added 11 points. Siondueh Burnette led Bard with nine rebounds, five blocked shots and four steals.

Bard's last game of the season will be on Friday at home against Berkeley College of New Jersey at 7:30 p.m. It'll be Senior Night for Jeremy Arnstein and Frank Stortini.
