Box Score CANTON, N.Y. - Friday was a big disappointment for the Bard College women's soccer team. The Raptors went into the weekend focused on beating Clarkson, and earning the school's first-ever Liberty League victory in women's soccer.
Bard was held to three shots and lost, 2-0.
It would have been easy to have a letdown on Saturday, but the Raptors picked themselves up and earned a hard-fought draw with St. Lawrence University, 1-1.
It's only the second point that Bard women's soccer has earned in the Liberty League since joining in 2011; and
Gina Lewis' goal, just before halftime, was the Raptors' first league tally since Oct. 22, 2011, when then-freshman
Joanna Regan scored in a 3-1 loss to RPI.
It took a great defensive effort and some great goalkeeping to earn a point on Saturday. Senior Erika Gobeille (Shelburne, VT) capitalized on one of several early chances to score and beat
Kelsey O'Brien at the 5:03 mark for a 1-0 lead. O'Brien made four crucial saves in the first half to keep it 1-0, until Lewis tied it just before halftime.
In the 42nd minute,
Maddy Huggins took Bard's only corner of the game and booted it into the box. It rattled around momentarily before Lewis settled it, turned, and beat sophomore keeper Kelsey West (Fall River, Nova Scotia) to tie it.
The Bard defense, anchored by
Neena Marano, weathered the storm in the second half as the Saints piled up nine shots to Bard's one. And Marano made a defensive save off a corner in overtime to preserve the point.
O'Brien made four saves in the first half;
Lily Harris made one save in the second half and overtime. The Raptors are 4-10-2 overall, 0-6-1 in the Liberty League.
Bard has three games remaining, starting with a non-league road game at Purchase College on Thursday. They then host Vassar on Oct. 29, and travel to Utica to finish the second on Nov. 2.
