Bard battles, but Hobart slowly pulls away

Freshman Siondueh Burnette had 15 points, eight rebounds, three blocked shots and three assists in a loss to Hobart on Friday night.
ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - When you remember that less than a month ago, the Bard College men's basketball team got crushed at Hobart, 91-45, you had to feel pretty good at halftime on Friday night.

Visiting Hobart had just a 33-26 lead over the Raptors after 20 minutes.

In the end, Hobart's superior size and depth proved to be too much to overcome, as the Statesmen gradually pulled away and beat Bard, 65-48.

Box score

Hobart, 20-4 overall and 13-2 in the Liberty League, has already locked up the top seed in the upcoming league playoffs. They weren't comfortable early, though, as Bard took a 9-2 lead and still led seven minutes into the game.

The Statesmen came back, took the lead, and appeared to be running away for the rest of the night when it was 30-19 with just under five minutes left in the first half. But Bard wasn't done. Senior Yonah Greenstein scored five of Bard's next seven points, and the deficit was seven at the break.

Five minutes into the second half the lead was 10; five minutes after that the lead was 15 ... and it eventually got as big as 22 as the Raptors just couldn't get stops or keep pace offensively. Sophomore Richie Bonnie (Norwich, NY) led Hobart with 15 points, senior Matt Pebole (Red Bank, NJ) added 12 points and seven rebounds, and the Statesmen produced 21 assists. Hobart finishes the regular season at Vassar on Saturday at 4 p.m.

Bard (5-19, 2-13) got a huge game from freshman Siondueh Burnette, who had 15 points, eight rebounds, three blocks and three assists. Matt Shubert also scored 15 points, and Yonah Greenstein added 10.

The Raptors wrap up the 2010-11 season when they host RIT on Saturday at 4.
