Bard bombs Albany Pharmacy, 87-57

Freshman Chris McNaughton shot 7-of-10 from the field and scored 19 points in 20 minutes.
ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - The Bard College men's basketball team hasn't often sent statisticians scrambling for the record books, but Thursday night was one of those nights.

Box score

The Raptors hit numerous marks they hadn't hit in years in an 87-57 thrashing of Albany College of Pharmacy.

The 30-point margin of victory was Bard's greatest since a 75-43 romp over Hampshire College on Feb. 17, 2004.

Bard's 13 three-pointers made Thursday night were the most the team had made since hitting 16 in a 115-111 loss to Penn State-Brandywine on Nov. 17, 2008.

It was the second time since Dec. 5 of last year that Bard had four players score in double figures.

And it was the first time since Feb. 12 of this year that Bard shot over 50 percent from the field in a game.

Albany Pharmacy (2-5) never led. The Raptors came out and bombed away over the top of the Panthers' zone. When that forced a change in defensive philosophy, Bard pounded the ball inside to 6-foot-5 powerhouse Siondueh Burnette. With the inside and the outside working, Bard ran out to 10-point lead midway through the first half and extended it to 17 by halftime.

In those first 20 minutes, Bard made 8-of-14 shots from beyond the three-point arc, while Burnette was making 4-of-5 shots down low. The Raptors shot 64 percent from the field in the first half.

As eye-opening as this performance by Bard was, the play of freshman Chris McNaughton really had mouths agape. In the first half, he made 4-of-6 shots from the field, including 3-of-5 three-pointers.(Prior to Thursday night, McNaughton was averaging less than 10 minutes and three points per game.)

In the second half, McNaugton made 3-for-4 from the field, including 2-of-3 three-pointers, as the Raptors eventually extended their lead.

McNaugton finished with 19 points on 7-of-10 shooting in just 20 minutes of play. Burnette also scored 19 points; senior Yonah Greenstein had 15 points, and freshman Francis Arnold added 13 points and seven assists. Frank Stortini led Bard with nine rebounds.

Albany Pharmacy got 17 points from sophomore Casey Redfern (Binghamton, NY) and 15 points from senior Tamer Elias (Toronto, Canada.) The Panthers host SUNY Canton on Sunday.

Bard (2-3) has won two games in the first semester for the first time since the 2007-2008 season, when the Raptors won three games before Christmas and lost two others in overtime. The Raptors next host St. Joseph's-Brooklyn on Saturday at 2 p.m.
