ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - Things were going so well. Bard was winning, 2-0, with 10 minutes left in a game they had more or less dominated in terms of possession and scoring chances.
It didn't end well, however.
Utica College rallied to tie the game in regulation, then defeated Bard with a golden goal in the first overtime to win a non-conference matchup, 3-2. It was the first time the teams had ever met in women's soccer.
Cosie Andujar gave Bard a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute, spinning a Utica defender around before scoring from 15 yards out. The Raptors had the better of the possession in the first half and outshot Utica, 6-3.
It continued in the second half, and Andujar struck again, this time bending a corner kick into the goal for a 2-0 lead in the 55th minute. It stayed that way until the 81st minute.
That's when junior Samantha Spohler (East Durham, NY) cut the lead in half off a short pass from sophomore Sarah Southwell (Rome, NY), who trapped a free kick into the box before getting it to Spohler.
Just more than two minutes later, Southwell took a through ball from senior Chelsea Way (Cuyler, NY) and beat Bard keeper
Simone Leitner to tie the match at 2-2 with 7:11 left in regulation time.
In the overtime, Spohler got the golden goal, collecting a loose ball and scoring to the far post from 12 yards out.
Bard (3-13) outshot Utica, 13-10, and earned 11 corners to six. The Pioneers are 5-10.
Saturday is Senior Day for Bard -
Kim Larie is the only senior. Her last home game will be against Bay Path College beginning at 1 p.m,
