Volleyball team splits on first day of tourney

After defeating SUNY Institute of Technology, 3-1, in its season opener on Thursday at home, the Bard College men's volleyball team lost to SUNYIT, 3-1, on the first day of the SUNYIT Tournament.

The Raptors (2-1 overall) began the day with a 3-0 sweep of Hilbert College (25-20, 25-18, 25-19).

This match against SUNYIT, much like the match at Bard, was closely contested and came right down to the wire. Bard lost 22-25, 21-25, 25-23 and 23-25.

Junior Nick Chan (Victor, NY) and freshman Billy Williams (Livingston, NJ) each had 12 kills against SUNYIT, and freshman setter Henry Kasiske (Los Angeles, CA) contributed 29 assists, 11 digs and six blocks. Junior Andrew Cortrite (Los Angeles, CA) also had 11 digs in that match, and Williams had eight digs.

Junior Ryan Meller (Eden, NY) had 18 kills and 10 digs for SUNYIT, 2-1 overall.

Against Hilbert, Chan had 12 kills, Williams had eight kills and nine digs, Cortrite had 14 digs, Kasiske had 24 assists and junior Ryan Fallon (Ridgewood, NY) had seven solo blocks.

Bard plays two matches on Sunday to complete the tournament - first against Stevenson University at noon, then against The Sage Colleges at  2 p.m.
