Maritime holds off Bard

Senior Christian Marghella had 17 points and nine rebounds against SUNY Maritime.
THROGGS NECK, N.Y. - Trailing by six with 3:56 left in the game, the Bard College men's basketball team suddenly went cold.

Bard missed four shots, turned the ball over twice and missed the front end of a 1-and-1 opportunity all in the final 3:56, as the Raptors lost to Skyline Conference opponent SUNY Maritime, 57-45, on Tuesday night.

The Raptors (1-14 overall, 1-9 Skyline) whittled a lead that was as big as 10 in the first half to four in the second half, but they couldn't get the stop or the big shot they needed to get over the hump.

SUNY Maritime (6-9, 4-6 Skyline) didn't exactly run away when Bard went cold - the Privateers also missed four straight shots when the score was 51-45 - but they did score six points in the final 1:08 to pull out another close win over the Raptors. SUNY Maritime beat Bard by two earlier in the season.

SUNY Maritime senior Quamel Lyerly (Inwood, NY) led all scorers with 23 points, and he added 10 rebounds and five steals.

Bard was led by senior Christian Marghella (Closter, NJ), who had 17 points and nine rebounds. Sophomore Frank Stortini added 11 points and eight rebounds, and sophomore Jeremy Arnstein chipped in with 10 points.

Bard travels to SUNY Purchase on Thursday for an 8 p.m. matchup with the defending Skyline Conference champions.
