Buzzer-beater misses, Bard loses

Christian Marghella had 19 points and 10 rebounds against SUNY Maritime.
ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - With time ticking down and the game on the line, Bard College junior Yonah Greenstein took the ball the length of the court, took to the air as he neared the lane, and released a floater as the buzzer sounded.

Front rim.

Bard lost at home to SUNY Maritime, 66-65, when Greenstein's shot bounced harmlessly away.

It culminated a wild final few minutes, and a wild night overall, as Bard went from down 10 in the first half, to up 12 in the second half, to missing that buzzer-beater.

It was tied at 64-64 when Bard senior Christian Marghella (Closter, NJ) went to the foul line to shoot one-and-one with 13 seconds remaining in the game. He made the first but missed the second, and Maritime junior Mike McSloy (Kings Park, NY) made a running 10-foot jumper to give Maritime the lead with 5.4 seconds left. It was the Privateers' first lead since 18:03 was left in the game.

Maritime pressed full court on the ensuing Bard possession. The ball was inbounded to Greenstein (Rego Park, NY), who dribbled past two defenders as he crossed halfcourt, split two other defenders as he neared the lane to the right of the foul line, and let the final shot go.

Bard, 0-5 overall and 0-2 in the Skyline Conference, has lost it's last two games by a total of four points.

Maritime made 18-of-21 foul shots, including 15-of-17 in the second half. Bard made 10-of-15 from the line in the game, but only 6-of-11 in the second half, including some crucial misses in the final moments.

The Raptors had four players score in double figures, led by Marghella, who had 19 points and 10 rebounds. Junior Matt Shubert (West Chester, PA) added 16 points, and sophomore Frank Stortini (Red Hook, NY) and Jeremy Arnstein (Washington, DC) contributed 12 and 13 points, respectively.

Junior Sam Porte (Harlem, NY) went 4-for-5 from the field and 7-for-7 from the line to lead Maritime with 16 points. McSloy added 15, including the game-winner.

Bard next hosts reigning Skyline Conference champion SUNY Purchase on Thursday at 8.
