RECAP: Bard Wins Game 2 against RPi; clinches Crossover Series

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. — The Bard College baseball team split a doubleheader with RPI for Alumni Day on Sunday afternoon at Honey Field. In Game 1, the Engineers won 7-3, while in Game 2, Bard defeated RPI 2-1.

Kane Morgan started on the mound for the Raptors in Game 1, starting on the mound in Honey Field one last time. Morgan pitched 7.0 innings with seven strikeouts. Henry Hubner came in as relief at the top of the eighth inning. Tom Maxwell came in the ninth inning to close it out, and he had a strikeout.

Charles Lehr started on the mound in Game 2 and went 5.1 innings pitched with eight strikeouts. Graham Benway followed with 1.2 scoreless innings, and Aidan Kiefer recorded two outs, one via a strikeout. Graham Williams recorded the high-leverage save with 1.1 innings pitched without a hit or a walk allowed.

With the win in Game 2, the Raptors clinched the 3rd seed in the East and will face 2nd seed in the West, Hobart, for a Liberty League Crossover series, which is the first time since 2024.
The series starts on Friday for a single game and then a doubleheader on Saturday with the if necessary game.

Game 1: RPI 7, Bard 3

It was a pitching battle between Morgan and Liam Riordan, with RPI managing to get a run in the top of the third. Bard managed to get 8 hits in the first game, as Riordan and Andrew Gaughan kept the Raptors from crossing home until the eighth inning.

Jamie Fryer came in as a pinch hitter in the bottom of the eighth and sent a rocket to left field for his fifth home run of the season. This home run placed him tied for first alongside Adam Carafotes in a single season. Andrew Plenn and Charlie Beauregard each had RBI singles in the ninth.

Game 2: Bard 2, RPI 1

Bard was engaged in another pitching duel in game 2, as Lehr was mowing down Engineer hitters left and right. In the fifth inning, the Raptors broke the tie, as Angus Lunt-Woodward singled in Jeremy Hall and Jack RIvlin. RPI answered in the sixth, as they loaded the bases with one out. Lehr walked in a run, and Benway was called upon to pitch from the bullpen. He pitched well plus fielded his position, getting the tying run out at home on a bunt. Then, to get the final out of the sixth, he induced a ground-out to sustain the one-run lead.

The Raptors had two-on, two-out in the sixth, but couldn't add on. Benway continued to come through in the clutch, stranding a runner on second in the top of the seventh. Bard continued to apply pressure, with two runners on in the seventh. Unfortunately, the insurance run didn't come. RPI nearly punished Bard in the eighth, as they generated two runners in scoring position with one away. Kiefer came in and struck out the Engineers looking on a full count to remove a sacrifice fly possibility. Another full count resulted in a walk to load the bases, and Bard sent in Williams. He attacked the strike zone and got out of the inning unscathed. Williams put together a 1-2-3 ninth and gave the Raptors their 11th win and fifth conference victory.
