RECAP: Men’s Volleyball Nearly Gets Revenge Over Ramapo But Falls in Five Sets

The Bard College men's volleyball team fell to Ramapo in a mid-week thriller on Wednesday, 23-25, 20-25, 25-21, 25-22, 11-15.

Pearse Esposito recorded a double-double with 28 assists, 12 digs, six kills, three aces, and three blocks. He led the team in assists, digs, and aces. Sidney Stein led the Raptors with 16 kills, adding five digs, two aces, two assists, and two blocks. Ansel Waisler had 15 kills, seven digs, a season-high five blocks, and three assists.

Lincoln Grisso posted five kills, three digs, two blocks, and an ace. Evan McMahon provided six kills, six digs, two aces, two assists, and a block. Zach Butler put up three kills, three digs, and two blocks. Gideon Jacob had 14 assists, seven digs, and an ace. Amadéo Pinto got three digs and an assist.

Ramapo escaped with a two-point victory in the first set, hitting 11 kills to Bard's 10. The Raptors had four blocks to the Roadrunners' one, but it wasn't enough. The set began in Bard's favor, with the Raptors going ahead 4-2. Bard led 8-7 when it received a boost from Stein, who had a kill and an ace to start a 5-1 run. Later on in the set, Bard had a three-point edge, 18-15, when Ramapo surged ahead after an 8-2 run made it 22-20. The Raptors tied it up at 22-22, causing a Ramapo timeout. The Roadrunners took three of the final four points in the set.

In the beginning of the second set, both teams exchanged blows, with nine of the first 14 points ending on a kill or an ace. Ramapo led 8-6 at that point, and the advantage grew to 11-6. Esposito had back-to-back aces during a 3-0 Bard run that trimmed the margin to two at 11-9, but an 8-2 Ramapo run right back gave the Roadrunners the cushion they needed to hold off the Raptors. Bard would climb back to 23-20 with a late 5-0 run, but the momentum was stopped after a Ramapo timeout.

The third set could have gone either way, with 14 ties in the frame. Bard got four of its eight kills from Stein and defended well against the relentless Ramapo attack. The Roadrunners had 37 attack attempts, the majority of which were dug up or wound up as errors. The Raptors were a touch more efficient, with a hitting percentage of .222 to Ramapo's .216.

Bard took control offensively in the fourth, hitting 18 kills to just four errors for a .378 hitting percentage. The Raptors also held Ramapo to a .200 hitting percentage. The Roadrunners began with a 6-1 lead, which quickly vanished as Bard used a 7-1 run to gain the lead. Ramapo led at 11-9 when a Raptor timeout reset the team's mentality, allowing Bard to go on a 6-2 run, three points via Waisler kills. With the match hanging in the balance at 22-22, the Raptors came through clutch with a 3-0 finish to force a fifth set.

The fifth set was decided by small margins, as neither team led by more than three until the final point. Bard was able to take a 5-4 lead early, and the Raptors were tied at 10-10 before a final burst by the Roadrunners clinched the match.

The regular season finale is on Saturday at 2 p.m., when the Raptors face SUNY Poly on the road. The Raptors will then await their fate on NEVC playoff seeding.
