RECAP: Men’s Volleyball Gets Victory Over Houghton at Potsdam Tri-Match

Waisler’s 29 kills against Potsdam rank second-most in a match in school history

The Bard College men's volleyball team was stopped by the Potsdam Bears but recovered to win against the Houghton Highlanders on Saturday. Against Potsdam, the Raptors fell 19-25, 17-25, 25-22, 21-25, and versus Houghton, Bard won the meeting 25-15, 25-17, 19-25, 23-25, 15-10.

Ansel Waisler racked up 38 kills on the day, including a career-high 29 versus Potsdam. It puts him second in program history for most kills in a match. He added 14 digs, six assists, and two blocks. Sidney Stein recorded 21 kills, eight digs, and four aces. Amadeo Pinto dug up 14 attacks. Evan McMahon had 13 digs, five aces, and seven kills.

Gideon Jacob totalled 13 assists and five digs. Lincoln Grisso notched 16 kills, five aces, and eight digs. The Raptors got 63 assists plus 10 digs and nine kills from Pearse Esposito. Zach Butler contributed nine kills, seven blocks, and two aces.

Next up for the Raptors is a 7 p.m. non-conference tilt at St. Joseph's LI on Friday.

Bard 1, Potsdam 3

The first set was even at 5-5 when Potsdam went on a 7-2 run to take a 12-7 lead. At 15-9, Bard went on an 8-4 run to get within one. At 18-19, the Bears finished the set on a 6-1 run. Potsdam won the kills category 12-10 and limited their errors better, committing just four to Bard's nine.

Potsdam slowly gained a four-point lead in the second set after winning 10 of the first 16 points. At 8-11, the Bears went on a 6-1 run to go up 17-9. Bard got a kill each from Waisler, Esposito, and Stein to make it 12-18. However, Potsdam kept the edge after the teams traded points all the way to the end of the set.

The Raptors won the third set, which was close the whole way, with neither team gaining a lead more than two until Bard strung together three straight at the end of the set. The Raptors had to come back from a slow start, down 4-2 early. They took 10 of the next 16 points and had a two-point edge of their own at 12-10. The Bears would continue to put pressure on Bard, but the Raptors withstood it to force a fourth set.

A 5-1 Potsdam start to the fourth put Bard behind the 8-ball, but five points in quick succession allowed the Raptors to take a 6-5 lead. That run included two aces from McMahon. The lead changed hands as Potsdam went on a 5-2 spurt. Bard won four of the next five to get ahead by one at 13-12. The deciding run happened when Bard led 17-15, as Potsdam rattled off five straight. The Bears also closed the match on a 4-1 run to seal it.

Bard 3, Houghton 2

The Raptors got off to a good start against Houghton, going up 5-3. The Highlanders took a lead after four straight points made it 7-5. Bard shifted gears and went on a 12-6 run over an extended period of time, getting offensive contributions from Stein, Esposito, McMahon, and Grisso. Hoghton saved two set points, but the 11-point cushion at 24-13 was enough for Bard to easily claim the set.

The second set mirrored the first early on – a 5-3 Bard lead turned into a 7-5 Houghton lead. Then, a kill by Butler ignited Bard, as they stormed ahead with a 13-4 rally. At 18-9, the Highlanders pushed back, winning four straight points. However, the Raptors built on their lead at 19-15, winning four of the next five to gain a seven-point advantage at 23-16. Butler was the go-to option late, getting back-to-back kills to conclude the stanza.

Houghton won the third set, helped by a 5-0 run after being down 0-2 to begin the frame. Bard pulled ahead momentarily at 6-5, but at 8-6, Houghton won four straight to go ahead 10-8. At 13-11, three straight kills from Jonah Sissel made it 16-11. Bard got to within two at 16-18, but five of the final seven points went the Highlanders' way. Houghton won the kill category 12-7, overcoming the Raptors' advantage in aces 2-1.

Early on in the fourth, the Highlanders maintained a lead that got as large as four at 11-7. Bard won five of the next seven points to make it 12-11 Houghton. The Highlanders took charge at 14-13, winning four straight to go up 18-13. The lead was six at 21-15, and Bard made a push, going on a 7-2 run to make it 23-22. Waisler saved a set point with a kill, but Houghton finalized the two-point set victory. Bard had 15 kills to Houghton's 13 in the set.

Tension was high in the deciding set, and a 3-3 start elevated the nerves. Three straight points from Bard gave them an edge at 6-3. Then, at 7-5, the Raptors fully took over with four straight and went ahead 11-5. Waisler clinched the match with a kill.
