RECAP: Men’s Volleyball Claims a 3-1 Victory over St. Joseph’s LI

The Bard College men's volleyball team defeated the St. Joseph's (LI) Golden Eagles on Friday night, 25-17, 25-19, 11-25, 25-18.

Sidney Stein had a season-high 18 kills to lead all players, and he recorded his second double-double of the season with 10 digs. Stein also collected two aces and two blocks. Lincoln Grisso tallied nine kills, four blocks, and a dig. Evan McMahon nearly had a double-double of his own, with career-highs of nine kills and 13 digs. He added a career-high two blocks.

Pearse Esposito stuffed the stat sheet, with 30 assists, seven digs, six kills, two aces, and two blocks. Ansel Waisler played one set, notching five kills, four digs, and an assist. Zach Butler chipped in three kills, a block, and a dig. 

Georgi Chikolov recorded 18 assists, three digs, and two aces. Damiel Batista had a kill and a dig, and Amadeo Pinto added seven digs. 

A quick 5-1 start by Bard set the tone, and the Raptors continued to push forward to a 10-4 scoreline. At 12-7, three straight points from Bard made it an eight-point lead at 15-7, although it was quickly trimmed to five at 16-11. In the final stretch, Stein had two kills during a 9-5 spurt that led to the first set victory. 

Another 5-1 opening from the Raptors featured kills from four different players. At 11-8, St. Joseph's LI made a statement run, winning six of the next eight points to take a 14-13 lead. The Raptors were unfazed, regaining the lead at 18-16 with three straight points bookended by Stein kills. The Golden Eagles threatened, continuing to make it close, exemplified by a 20-19 score at the end of the set. Bard rattled off five straight points to win the set, and McMahon had two kills in the run.

St. Joseph's LI was the team taking a 5-1 lead in the third set, and it ballooned to a 12-point lead at 17-5. The Golden Eagles hit .364 in the frame with 10 kills to two errors. The Raptors had a 5-2 lead in the fourth set when a 5-1 St. Joseph's LI run made it 7-6. It was very tight up until 13-13, when four straight from Bard made it 17-13. After that, the Raptors led by at least two the rest of the way. 

Bard starts a nine-match homestand against Hunter on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
