RECAP: Men’s Soccer Beats Union 1-0 for First Liberty League Win in 10 Years

Luca Costanzo’s game-winner at 17:52 seals the deal

The Bard College men's soccer team felt the taste of victory against the Union Garnet Chargers for the first time on Wednesday, 1-0. The last time that the Raptors had won against any conference opponent was a 2-0 win against RIT on October 15, 2016. The most recent Liberty League win on the road was a 1-0 victory over Clarkson on October 18, 2014.

Bard had the first scoring opportunity at the 1:03 mark, as Luca Costanzo had a shot on goal. Union had a dangerous chance a minute later, with an attempt going wide. Costanzo had the go-ahead goal 17:52 into the contest, as Emmett Olson broke through the defense, forcing the goalkeeper to make a save that was deflected out to Costanzo. He continued his aggression in the 22nd minute, taking a shot that ended up going wide right. The only other shot on goal in the half was a Union attempt that did not get through at the 31:36 mark.

Union had nine shots in the second half, and Jake Sudit made key saves at the 50:15, 72:21, and 77:17 marks down the stretch. With 5:32 left, Benett Hathaway attempted a bicycle kick in the box that went just wide, leaving the Bard bench with hands on their head. The Raptors continued to clamp down Union, as key stop after key stop was made. Sudit picked off a cross from Union's Luke Ingber with two minutes to play. On Union's final possession, the ball pinballed dangerously around the box, and a header was broken up, going wide. 14 seconds remained, and Sudit's strong punt salted away the rest of the time on the clock. As zeros showed, the Raptors on the bench stormed the field, finally seeing the fruits of their labor.

Sudit collected four saves and earned the Liberty League shutout, while Olson, Skeltis, Jamie Coequyt,, Evan Baukol, and Charalambos Vattis played all 90 minutes.

Next up for Bard is Senior Day against RIT on Saturday at 2 p.m.
