RECAP: Men’s Basketball Has Trouble With Skidmore

The Bard College men's basketball team was ousted by the Skidmore Thoroughbreds on Friday evening, 33-82, in Saratoga Springs.

Azikiwe Cuffy-Scott led Bard in scoring, with 10. He added five rebounds, a block, and a steal. Lucas Tovar had seven points plus four rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Sam Gibbs contributed five points, three steals, and a rebound.

Seth Dyer collected two points, five rebounds, and two blocks. Klaudius Skehel tallied two points, a rebound, an assist, and a block. Jalen Umstead contributed two points, a rebound, and a block. Angelos Bratakos couldn't get it going offensively but had five rebounds.

Sebastian Matz hit 1-of-2 from three, while Dimitrios Zampoukas rounded out the scoring with two points. Bryce Sampah corralled a career-high four rebounds and blocked two shots. Sampah has blocked two shots in three of the past four games.

Skidmore controlled the pace in the first half, scoring seven fastbreak points and 11 points off turnovers while not allowing any points from either of those categories. Bard was the first team on the board after Gibbs sank one from downtown. A 7-0 Skidmore run gave them the lead at 7-3 with 16:51 to play. The Raptors would tie it after Cuffy-Scott crashed the glass and tipped in a Gibbs miss. However, that was the closest it got, as an 11-0 Thoroughbred run allowed them to take control at 18-7. Tovar cut it to nine with a tip-in of his own, but another 11-0 run from Skidmore made it 29-9 with 7:42 left. At the end of the half, Skidmore led 42-15.

After the break, the Raptors were unable to get a field goal to go until 3:54 into the second half. Again, an offensive rebound and putback from Cuffy-Scott allowed Bard to score. With 15:37 to play, Tovar and Skehel put together back-to-back layups. Dyer would add to the mini-run just under two minutes later with a tip-in, forcing a Skidmore timeout. From there, the Thoroughbreds added on, going on a 21-3 run and sealing it, taking a commanding 74-28 lead with 4:56 left in the game.

Bard is back in action tomorrow at 4 p.m., when they play at Vassar.
