Box Score The Bard College women's tennis team sent Maria Castro and Paige Houghton into the singles and doubles draws of the ITA Northeast Regional Championships on Friday at Skidmore College's McCaffrey-Wagman Tennis and Wellness Center.
First up, Houghton faced off against Sophia Yang of NYU, combating everything that was thrown her way. Unfortunately, her efforts did not result in a game won.
Castro's singles match followed against Kaaviya Kannan of RPI. Castro gained a lead early while play was outdoors. However the Engineer rallied when rain forced play indoors, going up 6-5, but the Bard first-year made her work. At set point, a 27-shot rally concluded with a volley from Kannan barely clipping the corner. In the second set, Castro nearly got on the board by generating three break points, which Kannan saved.
In doubles action, Castro and Houghton opposed Vassar's Iris Li and Erin McCusker. The Brewers' team made it into the quarterfinals without dropping a game.
Natalie Lagunes and Catherine Chapel competed in the singles B draw. Lagunes was eliminated by RPI's Anushka Jaiswal, while Chapel was ousted by Rochester's Hailey Kornbluth. As a doubles team, Lagunes and Chapel led 3-1 against Rochester's Neha Dania and Rou Qian Wang, but the Yellowjacket duo shifted into a higher gear to win 8-4.
The Raptors play against RPI at home on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
