Houghton, Lagunes win in comeback fashion

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – The Bard College women's tennis team won 6-1 against the Purchase Panthers on Saturday.

Maria Castro/Paige Houghton outlasted the Panthers at No. 1 doubles, taking a nailbiter to clinch the doubles point. At No. 2 doubles, Natalie Lagunes and Catherine Chapel teamed up for the first time this season, winning four games in their debut. At No. 3 doubles, Jesse Radzik and Patricia Santos won after a 6-1 fight against Purchase.

Castro continued her undefeated start to her collegiate career, winning 6-0 6-0 at No. 1 singles. Houghton took the victory at No. 2 singles, where the senior came back from 0-3 down in the first set, winning seven straight games. Lagunes took a hard-fought victory at No. 3 singles, coming back from a set down and winning the final nine games of her match.

At No. 4 singles, Santos struck the ball well from the baseline in the second set to win five games. At No. 5 singles, Chapel won in dominant fashion by placing their shots well, forcing their Purchase opponent to play defensively. Radzik clinched the match after she took down her opponent in straight sets at No. 6 singles.

Bard travels to the USTA National Tennis Center to face Pratt tomorrow at 1 p.m.
