ONEONTA, N.Y. — The Bard College women's tennis team dropped a heartbreaker against Oneonta, 3-4, on Saturday. It was the smallest margin of victory in the all-time series since 2015.
Oneonta took the doubles point, but at No. 1 doubles, Maria Castro/Paige Houghton won 6-3, breaking the Dragons' serve to take the set. At No. 2 doubles, the Raptors' pair of Patricia Santos and Natalie Lagunes fell just short, 5-7, battling for every point. The Raptors' third duo, Catherine Chapel and Jesse Radzik, fell 3-6, despite good net play.
The Raptors saw a lot of new faces on the court with Castro, Lagunes, Chapel and Sienna Roveda all playing their first collegiate matches.
Castro defeated Oneonta's top flight player 6-2, 6-0 at the No. 1 singles spot, where the Bard first-year locked in and won the last seven games.
Houghton played No. 2 singles and fought hard, 4-6, 2-6. The Dragon on the other side of the net had more firepower and was landing her shots.
At No. 3 singles, Lagunes battled, falling 2-6 in the first set, fighting to 3-6 in the second.
Santos won in a dominant showing, 6-0 6-2 at No. 4. After rattling off six straight games, she rode that boost of confidence to the victory.
Chapel debuted in the No. 5 singles spot, where they played with freedom. They cruised to a 6-1 6-1 win, grinding out long rallies.
At No. 6, Sienna Roveda got out to a 2-1 lead. Both sets finished 6-3 in favor of Oneonta, but it could have gone to a third set due to the competitive nature of each game.
The Raptors have a quick turnaround, traveling to Western Connecticut on Monday at 4 p.m.
