The Bard College men's soccer team could not win back-to-back in the north country despite putting pressure on the Potsdam Bears on Saturday afternoon.
The Raptors had more shots, 13-7, and more corners, 13-4, but the Bears' defense was coordinated and made the stop each time.
In the first half, the Bard goalie,
Julian Landau, was tested early. Just over two minutes into the match, he prevented a pair of shots from getting past him, diving in front of his post to make two saves. In the 10th minute,
Mateo Betelu attempted to get space in the penalty area using his off arm, but his shot was saved. Just a minute later,
Luca Costanzo beat his man one-on-one, but he ran out of real estate, as the Potsdam goalie met him at the point of attack. Potsdam's goal came with 25:37 remaining in the first half, as a cross from the right side connected with an aerial header.
A midfield battle ensued in the first 17 minutes of the second half, as no shots on goal were recorded by either side.
Ben Steketee tried to capitalize on a loose ball in the box, but his shot rebounded off the goalie out of harm's way. Potsdam had a chance to increase its lead, but
Jake Sudit dove to save a free kick in the 66th minute. The Raptors' best chance to tie the match came with 17:29 left, when
Henry Skeltis headed the ball off the top crossbar, nearly missing the tying blow.
Skeltis, Betelu,
Brandon Alchy,
Aiden Trapp, and
Emmett Olson all played the full 90 minutes for the Raptors. In goal, Landau had two saves in the first half, and Sudit ended the match with one save.
Bard will conclude its three-match road trip at St. Joseph's Brooklyn Thursday at 6 p.m.
