The Bard College men's soccer team surged past St. Joseph's-Brooklyn's-Brooklyn using a strong second half. The Raptors outshot the Bears 21-2, to defeat SJBK, 3-0 on Thursday night.
Bard had 61% of possession in the first half with seven shots on target but was unable to find the back of the net.
Emmett Olson took the lead in shots with four, while
Aiden Trapp and
Mateo Betelu had two each after 45 minutes of play.
In the second half, Bard took only six minutes to score its first goal. The Bears struggled to clear the ball inside the box, and
Ben Steketee made them pay with a rocket of a right-foot kick to the top right corner of the goal.
Five minutes later, Steketee challenged an SJBK player, and Betelu saw the loose ball and took advantage of the breakaway. Betelu found
Devon Green wide open on the right-hand side. Green sent a rocket of a shot to the top right-hand corner and the Bears' goalkeeper was unable to do anything about it. It is Green's first collegiate goal.
Bard scored another insurance goal in the 69:49 mark.
Pablo Ortega, who was substituted in two minutes before the goal, made quick work as he got through three SJBK defenders to find Olson wide open at the top of the box. Olson's low left-foot shot in the bottom right-hand corner was enough to get past the Bears' goalkeeper.
Julian Landau and
Jake Sudit each had a save and the team's first shutout of the season. Meanwhile,
Henry Skeltis and
Zac Sparacio played the whole 90 minutes. Bard had an 8-4 corner kick and 17-2 shots on goal advantage.
Bard will face CCNY on Saturday for their home opener with a 2 p.m. kickoff.
