RECAP: Baseball falls short in doubleheader at RPI

The Bard College baseball team dropped its conference doubleheader against RPI on Saturday afternoon at Robison Field.

The two teams combined for 32 runs on 46 hits with different Raptors contributing to hits throughout both games with Xavier Webb, Jimmy Famuarlo, Jamie Fryer, and Andrew Plenn having a hit in both contests. Webb (2 hits in game 1), Famuarlo (2 hits in game 2), Fryer (2 hits in game 2), and Rob DeBello (4 hits in game 2) all had multiple-hit games.

Bard took an early 1-0 lead in game 1, but RPI answered with 3 runs in the second inning. The Raptors added runs in the 5th and 8th innings, but RPI maintained their lead with scores in the 6th and 7th, and broke the game open with 7 runs in the 8th and 9th. Bard scored two more in the 9th, but the game ended 13-6. In game 2, Bard led 3-0 after two innings, but RPI responded with homers in the second and continued to dominate, scoring 5 in the fourth and adding more throughout the game. Bard added runs in the third and eighth, but RPI finished strong with 4 runs in the 8th, winning 15-5.

Game 1: RPI 13, Bard 6

Bard took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning as the Raptors loaded the bases and Plenn drove Sam Dumper home with a ground-out double play RBI. However, RPI responded in the second with a string of hits placing them up 3-1 heading into the 3rd inning.

The Raptors fought back in the 5th, cutting the lead to 3-2 with an RBI-double to left field by Webb. The Engineers added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth and seventh to make it 5-2.

In the 8th, Bard mounted a rally with a fielding error by RPI and an RBI triple to left-center by Fryer to bring home Plenn.  A sacrifice fly by Spencer Azzara brings home Fryer, narrowing the gap to 5-4. However, RPI took advantage of the pitching change by the Raptors and scored eight runs to widen the score.

The Raptors weren't done fighting as they added two more runs on a wild pitch and a single to right field from Jeremy Hall in the top of the ninth but could not complete the comeback.

Bryant Elliott started on the mound and threw 6.1 innings with two strikeouts. Jackson Sprizen and Dylan Conte both came out of the bullpen as relief and Conte had two strikeouts.

Game 2: RPI 15, Bard 5 (8 Inn.)

Bard, once again, took a 1-0 lead in the first inning with an RBI ground-out by Fryer to bring Plenn home. The Raptors extended the lead to 3-0 in the second with an RBI single from Graham Marshall bringing Famularo home and capitalizing on a throwing error by RPI. The Engineers responded in the bottom of the second second with two solo home runs closing the gap to 3-2.

Bard added a run in the top of the third with an RBI ground-out by Gavin Gonzalez, to extend their lead 4-2. However, RPI quickly answered in the bottom of the frame with three runs to take a 5-4 lead and never looked back as they scored 10 more runs in the next three innings.

Charlie Lehr started on the mound and threw 2.2 innings. Henry Hubner, Elise Berger, Tom Maxwell, and Graham Benway all got some time on the mound today with Lehr, Hubner, Maxwell, and Benway all having one strikeout.

The Raptors will be back at Honey Field as they take on the Knights of Mount Saint Mary on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
