ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – The Bard College women's tennis team nearly took victories in multiple matches versus the New Paltz Hawks on Saturday afternoon. The Raptors' 33 games were more than doubled Bard's total in last season's meeting.
At No. 1 doubles,
Maria Castro and
Paige Houghton were neck-and-neck down the stretch, forcing the Hawks to serve it out.
Patricia Santos and
Catherine Chapel played at No. 2 doubles together and put all their energy into a close set, finding consistency from both the baseline and the net. At No. 3 doubles,
Jesse Radzik and
Natalie Lagunes competed well against the New Paltz duo.
The No. 1 and No. 2 doubles teams came closer to earning the doubles point against New Paltz than any other opponent this season. Together, they won nine games — more than the total games won by all five previous opponents combined against the Hawks' top two doubles teams.
At No. 1 singles, Castro gritted to a 6-2 first set win. The second set was within reach as well but the Hawks came through, forcing a third set 10-point tiebreak. New Paltz was able to take it 10-3. Castro is the first player to take a set off Justine Stanejko in a dual match this season. Houghton played at No. 2 singles, earning seven games against Sam Ostrander, who had not lost more than three games in a dual match this year. She battled back from a double break down at 1-4 in the second set to get within one game at 4-5 before the Hawks served it out. Lagunes got three games, including the first two games of the second set at No. 3 singles.
At No. 4 singles, Santos almost got on the scoreboard, but New Paltz came to the net and dealt with her varied passing shots. Chapel withstood the Hawks' pace, earning two games in the first set of No. 5 singles. Radzik was quick from the baseline at No. 6 singles, extending rallies.
