Box Score The Bard women's volleyball team battled well but couldn't overcome the Union Garnet Chargers on Wednesday evening.
Bard went up 7-6 early in the first set, powered by a couple of kills from
Paola De La Cruz. However, Union adjusted and prevented her from recording a kill for the rest of the set. The Garnet Chargers went on a 19-4 run the rest of the way to close it out.
In the second set, Bard was a strong blocking team, with four swats compared to Union's three. The Raptors won five of the first eight points in the set, with kills from De La Cruz and
Becca Wintjen. Bard maintained a two-point edge until 9-7, when Union used a 7-1 run to storm ahead 14-10. After a timeout at 19-12, the Raptors clawed back with a 6-1 rally. However, Union was able to grab five of the final six points and take the set.
The Garnet Chargers won the third set after creating an early six-point cushion at 8-2 and holding off the Raptors after their 4-0 run immediately following. Bard was even with Union in aces, 2-2, and held the edge in limiting service errors, 1-2, but the play after the serve favored the Garnet Chargers.
Annika Flittie stood out with nine digs, five kills, two aces, and a block.
Xenia Vassou had five kills on .417 hitting for the Raptors, who had a total of 24 kills on the evening. Wintjen and
Fernanda Julian led Bard in digs, each tallying nine. Wintjen added four kills, two blocks, two assists and an ace, while Julian was the primary setter and had 19 assists plus two kills.
Carmen Merrick displayed poise with four kills on .375 hitting, two blocks, and three digs. De La Cruz chipped in four kills and an assist.
Ella Small recorded seven digs and an assist.
The Raptors will host a tri-match with Ithaca and NJCU on Saturday at 1 p.m.
