RECAP: Women’s Volleyball Clashes with Pratt

Nyla Lawrence records career-high 16 kills

The Bard College women's volleyball team was defeated by the Pratt Cannoneers on Tuesday night.

Nyla Lawrence recorded a career-high 16 kills, adding two blocks and a dig. Xenia Vassou and Carmen Merrick each notched seven kills. Annika Flittie hit six aces and six kills while getting 11 digs. Fernanda Julian set a career-high with 41 assists and chipped in two aces, two kills, and three digs.

Ella Small led all players in digs, with 19. She added two assists. Becca Wintjen had ten digs, five aces, two kills, and two assists. Alex Beer had five kills on 11 swings. Ninni Ylenius served up a career-high five aces and added three digs.

Bard was down 3-4 in the first set when Ylenius helped the Raptors win four straight points with two aces. Bard followed up that run with a 4-1 run to make it 11-6. Pratt came back after a timeout, gaining a two-point lead at 15-13. The Raptors were relentless, going on a 4-0 run in response. The Cannoneers re-took the lead at 18-17, but a clutch 6-2 push by Bard — including three aces from Ylenius — allowed the Raptors to take the set by four points.

Pratt took a 6-1 lead early in the second frame and held off Bard. At 23-17, the Raptors had a late 5-0 stretch, but the Cannoneers escaped with the set victory. In the third set, a back-and-forth beginning led to a 15-15 tie. Then, two kills from Flittie sparked a 9-1 Bard run that created some separation, making it 24-16. A 10-0 Pratt run flipped the set around and gave the Cannoneers a 2-1 set lead.

In the fourth set, the Raptors responded well, going up 8-4. Pratt tied it at 10-10 before a 6-1 Bard run forced a timeout. The set was knotted at 19-19 when the Raptors won five of the next seven points. The Cannoneers called their last timeout and saved two set points before Merrick sealed it 25-23 for Bard. The Raptors hit 16 kills in the set to just three errors, good for a hitting percentage of .394.

Pratt was able to take the fifth set along with the match. At 3-3, they went on a 10-1 run that gave them an insurmountable lead. The Cannoneers hit .615 in the set.

The Raptors return to Liberty League action on Friday at 6 p.m., when they play St. Lawrence.
