The Bard women's lacrosse team earned its first victory of the season on Saturday afternoon on Ferrari Field, beating Wentworth Institute of Technology by a 18-4 score.
The Raptors were led by
Izzi Popolizio, who had a career-high five goals and four assists, and whose nine points almost tied the school record of 10.
Gwendolyn Jamison had four goals,
Emerson Embrey had three (her second straight game with a hat-trick), and
Maggy Peyton had a pair. Peyton also tied Popolizio with four assists, a career-high for the junior.
The two teams traded goals in the opening minutes of the game, with Wentworth jumping out to 1-0 and 2-1 leads before Bard took control of the match, scoring four unanswered to end the first quarter up 5-2. The Raptors again dominated at the end of the second quarter and went into halftime up 10-4.
The Raptors dominated the second half, outscoring Wentworth 5-0 in the third quarter and 3-0 in the fourth, pushing the lead past 10 goals and allowing the clock to run throughout most of the half.
Maya Junkins was strong in the faceoff circle, setting a career-best with eight draw controls, and Embrey set a new mark with four caused turnovers. Peyton's six ground balls led the team and were a new career best.
Lexie Blackburn made three saves to earn the win in goal.
The game also served to raise funds and awareness for Morgan's Message, a charity that strives to eliminate the stigma surrounding mental health within the student-athlete community.
The Raptors will return to action on Wednesday when the team visits Union College at 6pm in the Liberty League opener for the squad.
