BRONXVILLE, N.Y. – The Bard College men's basketball team brought home its first season victory with a 67-51 win over Washington College at the Sarah Lawrence Academic Classic.
Bard shot 40.4 percent from the field and 35.7 percent from behind the arc. It scored 14 second-chance points and 13 points off turnovers. The Raptors went on a 30-7 run in the last 11 minutes during the second half to get past the Shoremen.
Hot off their performance from last night, graduate students
Lazaros Panagiotounis and
Azriel Almodovar led the team in scoring and rebounds. Panagiotounis scored back-to-back 20+ points with 24 points. He added two rebounds and shot 6-of-10 from behind the arc. Almodovar got his first double-double of the season with 15 points, a team-high 11 rebounds and added three steals.
Sean Wilcox added nine points and five rebounds, while
Ahmad Rauf scored a career-high seven points.
The first-year group added 12 points, with
Jalen Umstead totaling five points and five rebounds.
Joshua Bayne and
Seth Dyer each had three points, while
Max Frei grabbed four rebounds and dished two assists.
Washington started off hot, taking a 16-10 lead after eight minutes of play. The Raptors trailed by as many as 12 points in the first half, but they went on an 11-4 run to only trail by five points entering halftime.
Both teams were back and forth in the second half, with Bard not trailing by more than five points in the first three minutes of the half. Tied at 37-37 at 14:04, Washington went on a 7-0 run in a three-minute stretch, but back-to-back three-pointers from Panagiotounis and a free-throw made by Almodovar tied the game up at 44-44. A 23-7 run in the last nine minutes from Bard gave the Raptors the edge over Washington.
Bard returns to action at 3 p.m. on Saturday when they head to Sage.
