ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y — The Bard College women's soccer team (3-8-1) took down CCNY (1-8-1) in an impressive Monday matinee performance, scoring all three goals in the second half.
The Raptors drew even with the Beavers after 45 minutes of action. After early shots on goal by
Mahlia Slaiby and
Waleska Brito, the Raptors were entrenched in a battle for possession in the midfield.
Seymone Rosenberg made a save two minutes into the game, preventing Sara Rodriguez's long range shot from causing trouble. With five minutes remaining,
Carina Cooke had an attempt from about 20 yards out that she pushed wide right.
The Raptors held the corner advantage 2-1 heading into the second half. They attempted six shots, two of which required saves, while the Beavers attempted two shots with one on goal.
After halftime, Bard executed their new game plan to perfection.
Slaiby juked a defender to the ground, sent a cross that the CCNY goalie tipped, and watched as Leverentz finished the play. Leverentz scored what turned out to be the game winner at the 45:26 mark, immediately after kickoff. Ten minutes later, a foul set up the Raptors' second goal. McCauley lined up for the free kick from 40 yards out and punted the ball through the top of the net, deflecting in off the goalkeeper's fingertips.
The Raptors added another goal as insurance just four minutes later. A cross from Cooke from outside the box found Brito's foot positioned in the middle of the penalty area. Brito hit the crossbar and got the bounce to go her way for her team-leading sixth goal of the season.
Monday's game was the second time the Raptors faced the Beavers, winning at home after losing on the road in 2009.
Natalie Wing and Leverentz each played for over 80 minutes.
Seymone Rosenberg had a save in the first half,
McKenna Reeves played just under 32 minutes, and
Thayden Hamilton-Howard got her first appearance and led the team with two saves in her first game for Bard.
The Raptors' Kick it Pink game, which supports the Miles of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation, will be held on Friday at 4 p.m. when they take on Clarkson.
