Bard notches a win over SUNY Canton after falling in four sets to St. Lawrence

The Bard College women's volleyball team split a pair of matches in the north country on Friday.  They bounced back, securing a 3-2 win over SUNY Canton, after losing their Liberty League opener to St. Lawrence earlier in the day.

Bard (7-8, 0-1 Liberty League) received strong efforts from several players, with senior Ryan Lum leading the way with 29 kills and 41 digs. Lum had a career-high 24 digs against St. Lawrence and added four aces.

First-year LaeAnna Riley totaled 17 kills, including a career-high 12 kills against SUNY Canton. Sophomore Abi Batingan had eight kills in each match, while senior Emily Hall Smith added 14 kills and three aces tonight.

Senior setter Adi David led the team with 63 assists and added 11 kills and four aces. Classmate Puja Clements had a career-high five aces against SUNY Canton, and added 17 digs. Sophomore libero Ella Small had 34 digs, including a season-high 19 digs against SUNY Canton.

Bard will travel to Clarkson tomorrow for their second conference matchup at 2 p.m.

St. Lawrence 3, Bard 1

Bard outpaced St. Lawrence (3-6, 1-0) in kills 16-9 but their seven errors cost the Raptors the first set. In the second set, the Raptors had set point at 24-23 following a kill from senior Annie Couey, but the Saints kept themselves alive with back-to-back kills. The Raptors fought off game point with a kill from Smith and Batingan followed up with one of her own to secure the second set victory.

The teams were tied 16-16 in the third set but a 5-0 run from the Saints helped St. Lawrence to secure the third set, giving them a 2-sets-to-1 advantage. The fourth set saw three tied scores and two lead changes. The set was tied at 15-15, but St. Lawrence went on an 8-2 run to take a 23-17 lead. The Raptors answered back with a 5-0 run of their own but were unable to complete the comeback as the Saints sealed the victory with back-to-back kills.

Bard 3, SUNY Canton 2

The five-set matchup against SUNY Canton (2-10) was a rollercoaster, with both teams running off several streaks of points. The Roos opened the first set with a 15-5 lead and had a .433 hitting efficiency. The Raptors went on an 11-6 run to narrow the deficit to 21-16, but it was not enough to secure the first set.

In the second set, Bard flipped the script and took a 21-9 lead with a 15-3 kill advantage. The Raptors finished off the dominant set performance with a kill from Riley. The third set swung back in Canton's favor as they kicked it off with a 15-6 lead. The Raptors narrowed the deficit to just two points at 21-19 but an attacking error from the Raptors gave the Roos a 2-1 lead heading to the fourth set.

The Raptors jumped out to a 20-5 lead, the most they have had against any team this season. The Raptors' offensive power was the catalyst as they outhit their opponents, notching 11 kills to Canton's three. Bard maintained their momentum going into the fifth set and went on an 11-3 run to set themselves up for victory. The win was finalized with a kill from Riley in the middle.
