ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. — The Bard College Women's Soccer team scored its most goals in a match under head coach
Kate Hofstede as the Raptors defeated Lehman 8-1 at Ferrari Field on Wednesday evening.
Bard (2-1) applied steady offensive pressure throughout and capitalized on a 26-1 advantage in shots on goal. Sophomore
Carina Cooke had two goals and three assists, her seven points tonight was the most by a Raptor since Avalon Qian scored a hat trick and totaled six points. First-year
Mahlia Slaiby had two goals and an assist, and junior
Waleska Brito scored twice. Seniors
Kylie Quinn and
Emma LaPenta added a goal each, while fellow seniors
Emma Kuntz and
Aidan Athanasio each notched an assist.
Quinn scored the first goal in the 13th minute from close range off a cross from Kuntz. Less than eight minutes later, Cooke hit the crossbar with a free kick and the rebound bounced to LaPenta, who scored with a header. It was LaPenta's first collegiate goal, and also the eventual game-winner.
Lehman pulled a goal back three minutes later on what would turn out to be the Lightning's only shot on goal in the game. But just over two minutes later, Brito scored her first goal of the season with a shot from the top of the box and into the left corner, just out of reach of the goalkeeper. Five minutes later, Athanasio fed Slaiby a perfect cross which the first-year finished with a lofted shot from outside the box into the top right corner.
Cooke scored the first of her two goals early in the second half with a free kick into the top right corner. Slaiby then added her second goal in the 63rd minute with a left-footed shot from the top of the box.
Within two minutes of Slaiby's second goal, Cooke added her second, finishing off a pass from Slaiby. Brito then closed the scoring with her second goal off, taking Cooke's pass at the six-yard box and slotting it past the keeper.
Lehman got 18 saves from goalkeeper Diallo Ramatoulaye. The Raptors' eight goals are the team's most in a match since an 8-0 shutout of St. Joseph's College - Brooklyn on Sept. 2, 2017.
Bard will return to Ferrari Field on Saturday at 1 p.m. when they host Purchase. The Raptors are using the game to raise awareness and funds for Morgan's Message, a charity focused on mental health for student-athletes; there will be a raffle, prize giveaways, and a bake sale.
