ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, NY – The Bard men's volleyball team celebrated its two graduating seniors on Thursday night in Stevenson Athletic Center, battling SUNY Poly in a tight 3-1 loss for the Raptors.
Seniors
Quincy Ross and
Angel Obergh were given a warm recognition before the match, joined by family and Bard faculty and staff who have made an impact on their lives at the College. It was the final home game for the duo.
"Tonight we were thrilled to celebrate our seniors for all their accomplishments and commitment to the program and to the whole Bard community," said coach
Tyler Zowaski. "From the start of the match, everyone on the court contributed, played a role, and fought for their teammates. We look forward to finishing the regular season strong on Saturday, but this was an opportunity to congratulate Quincy and Angel for everything they've done in their four years here."
Ross, who was injured in the first match of the season and had not been able to play since, served for the Raptors to open the match and received a standing ovation when he came off the court at the end of the opening point.
From there it was a battle between two highly competitive teams, with SUNY Poly establishing an advantage with strong serving and offense, and the visitors won the first two games 25-18.
The third set was another story, as Bard fought back and opened up an 11-5 lead before SUNY Poly called timeout. The Wildcats fought back, finally tying the game at 22-22, and later serving for the match at 24-23. Obergh had a fantastic kill to draw the game level at 24, and the two teams traded points but neither team could close out the set.
At 28-28, another big Obergh kill gave Bard the lead, and a
Ty McGlynn service ace won the set 30-28.
The fourth set was close but Poly opened up a lead, and despite a late comeback attempt behind Obergh's serving, the visitors closed it out 25-19 for the win.
McGlynn had an extremely strong match offensively, with 15 kills, and Obergh added another five.
Isaiah Ortiz had three kills and hit .600 and
Calvin Mader-Clark had two and hit .500, while
Georgi Chikolov had 21 assists as the setter.
The Raptors will travel to Eastern Nazarene this weekend to close out the regular season with a spot in the NECC playoffs still up for grabs.
