Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's soccer team loses opener in overtime

CANTON, N.Y. - The Bard College men's soccer team lost to SUNY Canton, 1-0, in overtime in the season opener for both teams on Saturday.

The game was played evenly throughout, with Canton holding an 11-10 edge in shots and Bard holding a 5-3 edge in corners. SUNY Canton's Martin Torales (White Plains, NY) hit the post with a direct kick early in the second half; Bard's Nic Soucy struck a header in the 66th minute that keeper Owen Kwong (Staten Island, NY) deflected into the post before it was cleared away.

"It was an even match where both teams had several opportunities to put the game away during regulation," Bard coach TJ Kostecky said. "I was pleased that we were able to play several first-years who learned they can all compete at this level. Kudos to the terrific golden goal by SUNY Canton's No. 10."

Junior Agustin Nunez (White Plains, NY) scored the game-winner in the 97th minute after settling a pass in the penalty area and punching a goal in from close range. Gavin Hersey made five saves in his collegiate debut for Bard.

"Gavin in goal, Nick (Agugliaro) and Bobby (Knoth) did a great job oranizing our defense and preventing shots on goal," Kostecky said. "We learned a lot. Moving forward, we need to take our chances better."

Bard will next travel to Utica on Tuesday to take on Hartwick College in a non-league match.
