Raptors rally from two sets down to defeat John Jay

WAYNE, N.J. - The Bard College women's volleyball team rallied to take down John Jay, 3-2, during a tri-match at William Paterson University on Saturday.

Bard began the day with a 25-12, 26-24 and 25-14 loss to William Paterson. Then the Raptors lost the first two sets to John Jay, 27-25 and 25-20.

Bard swept through the Bloodhounds after that point, 25-14 in the third set, 25-20 in the fourth, and 15-4 in the fifth. It was Bard's third five-set victory of the season.

"We pride ourselves on being able to get our opponents out of system with our serving and we weren't able to get that going against William Paterson, who controlled the ball exceptionally well," Bard coach Stefanie Carrington said. "We re-centered that as we headed into our second match and it really helped give us the advantage we needed."

Emily Smith had nine kills and 10 digs in the first match, and she had 12 kills, seven digs and three aces against John Jay. Adi David had 48 assists combined.

"Our athletes have had a lot on their plates this week," Carrington said. "They've been working so hard in practice and giving everything they've got so I'm really happy for their hard work to have paid off with a win this afternoon.

"Puja Clements really impressed me throughout both matches today," she added. "Her defensive reads and her relentless play kept us in a lot of rallies well beyond when the other teams expected to score. Energy was another key factor in our performance today and, when we needed it most, Lily Clough was the heart and soul of our team."

The Raptors next play at Sage on Tuesday.
