ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - Competing for the first time in 384 days, the Bard College baseball team split a pair of non-conference games with Vassar College on Saturday, winning the first game by a score of 10-5, then dropping an 8-2 decision in game two.
Senior
Justin Fiume (Cliffside Park, N.J.) led the way for the Raptors (1-1) in Game 1, going 2-for-4 with 3 RBI, including a two-run double in the first inning that electrified the Raptors, who put up four runs in the opening frame.
"I'm happy overall with day one," Bard coach
Andy Salvatore said. "I'm happy first and foremost just to be back. There were positives and negatives, which is what we expected. On the mound we were OK, and we commanded two or three pitches, which is what we need."
Sophomores
Michael Hannan and
Jared Toby also contributed to the offense in Game 1, with both players picking up two hits and two RBI in the contest.
Bard wasn't able to repeat their offensive success in Game 2 though, as the Brewers (1-1) picked up three runs in the first inning and never looked back, winning it, 8-2. Senior
Jordan Myers led Bard, as he went 3-for-5 with an RBI double.
Salvatore said he liked what he saw from the younger players, some who were competing in their first collegiate games.
"A bunch of the younger guys took some good swings for us." He said. "I say younger guys, to me that also means the sophomores because they only got four games last year, so we were happy with what we saw from them as well."
Up next for Bard is a non-league doubleheader with Clarkson at Honey Field on Saturday. Follow the action live right here.
