Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

After tying game at the horn, Raptors lose double OT thriller in opener

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - A furious second-half rally culminated with a game-tying goal as time expired, but the Bard College men's lacrosse team lost a heartbreaker in its opener, 11-10, in double overtime to Mount St. Mary College on Saturday.

The visiting Knights took charge early, outshooting Bard 18-4 in the first quarter. But senior goalie Lyle Healey made nine saves in the first 15 minutes, and Corey Rich scored late to cut the deficit to 3-1 off an assist from freshman Chuck Reycroft.

Mount St. Mary extended the lead in the second quarter with three man-up goals, the last one coming with one second left in the first half. It was 9-4 at the break, but everything changed as soon as the third quarter started.

Devon Wall assisted on a goal by pole Jacob Phillips, who bounced one past Devin Kelley (Hebron, CT) to make it 9-5. An unassisted goal by Wall accounted for the only other scoring in the third quarter, and it was 9-6 heading to the fourth quarter.

A man-up goal at the 10:27 mark of the fourth quarter made it 10-6, and the Raptors needed something. They got it. Wall scored against at 8:39 to make it 10-7. Reycroft scored a man-up goal at 6:36 to make it 10-8. And Roscoe scored at the 5:29 mark to make it 10-9.

Opportunities came and went for both teams in the ensuing five minutes, but it all came down to one possession in the final seconds. Bard had the ball with 25 seconds left but turned it over, and a Mount St. Mary defender scooped up the ball and threw it out of bounds. The Knights called time out with 16 seconds left, and Bard would have possession in its offensive zone on the restart.

The ball went round and round, and as the crowd screamed for someone to shoot, the clock wound down and at the last possible second, Reycroft found Rich crossing right to left, got him the ball, and his lefty shot scored low to the far post as the horn sounded. The officials conferred, the goal counted, and it was 10-10 going into overtime.

Both goalies made one save in the first overtime. In the second overtime, a shot by Mount St. Mary was stopped by Healey, but his stick was checked on the transition pass attempt. Michael Gallucci (Northport, NY) picked up the ground ball and found Billy Holland (Pearl River, NY) right on the doorstep, and he dumped it in for an 11-10 victory.

It was an unfair result for Healey, who was heroic in defeat, making 24 saves. Rich, Roscoe, Wall and Sojka each scored twice, and Wall added three assists. Emanuel Grenier-Benoit led Bard with six ground balls.

Gallucci and Brandon Holloway (Garden City, NY) had two goals and two assists apiece for Mount St. Mary.
