Raptors drop three set match to John Jay

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - The Bard College men's volleyball team was defeated by John Jay College Tuesday night, falling by a score of 3-0 to the Bloodhounds.

The Bloodhounds (2-9) were hot right at the start, winning seven consecutive points to start the match. The Raptors (1-9) were able to win four of the next five to pull within a score of 8-4, but John Jay, led by three kills from both Alejandro Gallardo (Bronx, N.Y. ) and Jack Nugent (Floral Park, N.Y.) eventually pulled away and picked up a 25-12 victory in the first set.

Bard fared much better in the second set, as they hung with the Bloodhounds throughout. Unfortunately, it was not enough as John Jay picked up a hard-fought win in set two by a score of 26-24. Freshman Quincy Ross earned two kills in the set, and senior Esteban Rivera assisted on three points and had three digs in the middle frame. The Raptors had the advantage late in the set, but the Bloodhounds went on a 7-1 run to take a 24-21 lead. Bard came back with three straight points to tie before the visitors picked up the following two to claim the set.

John Jay jumped out to an early 8-2 lead and seemed as though they would cruise in the third set, but the Raptors fought back with a 7-1 run of their own to get back in it. Again the teams battled back and forth late into the set, but it was ultimately the Bloodhounds who came away victorious, earning a 25-22 win to pick up the victory in the match despite a late rally from the home team.

Ross led the Raptors on the night with season-high five kills and a .364 hitting percentage, while Rivera led the team with nine assists and eight digs.

Bard will kick off conference play in their next match, as the Raptors host Elmira College Sunday, Feb. 16 at 11:00 a.m.
