Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Sangston scores first career goal as women's soccer defeats Drew, 1-0

MADISON, N.J. - For the first time in 13 years, the Bard College women's soccer team won both weekend games, as the Raptors held off host Drew, 1-0, at the Drew Fall Festival on Sunday.

After rallying to beat Coast Guard in overtime, 3-2, on Saturday, everyone's legs were a little heavy on Sunday. Drew dominated the first half, outshooting Bard 8-0.

The Rangers continued to carry the better of the play in the second half, until the 69th minute. Freshman Paige Sangston intercepted a clearing attempt and ripped a shot from 25 yards that got over the head of Drew keeper for a 1-0 lead.

"Paige collected a loose ball, and she cracked it," Bard coach Bill Kelly said. "That thing had a vapor trail. But that's something she's known for, and that's why she's out there."

Another freshman, Skylar Farmer, was the story from there. After entering the game early in the first half, the keeper stuffed a breakaway attempt in the first half, and finished with nine saves to thwart the hosts. Drew ended up outshooting Bard, 20-4.

"I'd never heard the sound of a ball coming off of someone's abdominal wall before, but she came out to stop a breakaway and there was a big boom," Kelly said. "She made some tough saves. The first years were great all over the field."

The Raptors return to the field Saturday, Sept. 14, when they travel to Wilkes-Barre, Pa. to take on Wilkes University, with game time scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
