ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - In a game that turned out to be a real battle of attrition, the Bard College and SUNY Oneonta women's soccer teams settled for a 1-1 draw on Tuesday night.
The visiting Red Dragons, who had already played four other Liberty League teams this season (and went 1-1-2), started the game with energy and purpose, keeping the Raptors on their heels for the entire early portion of the first half. After that initial surge, however, Bard settled in and was able to make the possession game more even.
That didn't mean more scoring opportunities, but it did mean less pressure in Bard's defensive third. Bard keeper
Abigail Stanley had already faced nine shots and made five saves before the Raptors even produced a shot on goal. It looked like the game was going to be scoreless as the first half wound down.
But freshman substitute
Paige Sangston made the most of Bard's one shot with less than 90 seconds left in the half. She was trying to make a diagonal run toward the top of the box and she collided with an Oneonta defender, then kept going. The ball was temporarily caught up between two Oneonta defenders, but
Abby Frazier got a back-heel touchh on it, and Sangston blasted a low shot just inside the far post to give Bard a 1-0 lead at the break. Shots were 9-1 in favor of the visitors at that point.
The Red Dragons (2-2-3) once again came out aggressively to start the half and scored right away. Joie Tortorice (Melville, NY) hit a diagonal pass that found Kelsey Smith (Clifton Park, NY) at the corner of the box, and she hit a high shot to the far post to equalize with less than two minutes gone.
The game went back and forth in the second half, Oneonta with an edge in possession, but no great scoring chances produced for either side. In the first overtime, senior
Sarah George cleared a shot by Abbey Wood (Dover Plains, NY) that would have ended the game off the line in the 98th minute, Sangston had a solid opportunity saved in the 108th minute, and Stanley made two excellent decisions to stop scoring opportunities off crosses in the final two minutes to preserve the result. Both teams were worn out by the time the final horn sounded.
Stanley finished with eight saves. Claire Lepper made two saves for Oneonta.
Up next for Bard is a Liberty League game against Ithaca at home on Saturday. Follow it live right here.
