SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The Bard College men's soccer team lost a non-league road game on Tuesday, falling to Western New England University, 1-0.
The only goal of the game came in the fifth minute, and it was a strange one. The Golden Bears (5-1) had a throw-in from the far side to the near post. It cleared one of Western New England's strikers and a Bard defender, who were battling for position, took a giant bounce at the edge of the box, and was headed in from a foot away right in the center of the goal mouth by Matt Remillard (Palmer, MA).
Western New England carried the better of the play on the day, with a decided edge in possession. And Remillard's goal stood up because Bard (1-5) was held without a shot.
The Raptors' best opportunity came in the final seconds of regulation time, when they earned their first corner. With under 10 seconds left and everyone, including Bard goalie
Logan Leppo, in the box, the effort was cleared away by a defender as time expired.
Leppo finished with six saves.
Up next for Bard is its Liberty League opener at Vassar on Saturday afternoon. Follow it live right here.
